Why October is the time to plan your Christmas gifts

I love Fall! I'm the kind of person who gets annoyed when I hear Christmas music earlier than December, and I'd like Santa to stay at the North Pole until at least Black Friday. While I wait until December to get in the Christmas spirit, October is the time I start planning my Christmas gifts. Yes, October.

Maybe you're one of those people who buys gifts for people throughout the year. If you are - congratulations, I envy you! Still, chances are you're like me, and you're trying to ignore the impending rush of holiday cheer. While I intend to savor every moment of fall, I know that planning my Christmas gifts early will save me time, money, and sanity.

So, why is now the time to buy Christmas gifts?

1. You can set expectations in advance.

I truly enjoy giving gifts, but it can be overwhelming when your list starts to rival Santa's. If you start planning for Christmas early, you have enough time to talk with your family and friends about how you want to tackle gift-giving. For example, about ten years ago, my mother's family decided to do a Secret Santa for Christmas. Instead of everyone buying gifts for everyone, each family member is randomly assigned another family member to buy for. This way, the family can still enjoy giving and receiving gifts without breaking the bank.

2. You have time to DIY.

If you're crafty, you might want to make something for the people on your gift list. I'm a huge fan of homemade gifts, but I often underestimate the time it takes to create them! If you start planning for Christmas in advance, you'll have enough time to plan your project, purchase your materials, and complete your work. There's nothing worse than coming up with an excellent idea and not having enough time to complete it. Looking for simple suggestions? We have a tutorial for sewing pin Christmas ornaments here, and a tutorial for homemade coasters here.

3. You have time to buy something handmade.

Yes, I sell on Etsy, but I love shopping on Etsy too! Buying handmade gives you the chance to support independent artists and allows you to purchase something unique for your loved ones. While many Etsy shops are stocked with inventory, some items are made to order. Similarly, you may discover that you want to place a custom order with a shop, and the shop owner will need some time to both create and ship your one-of-a-kind item. Finally don't forget about allowing enough time for shipping, especially if you are purchasing internationally.

4. You can save money.

When you're frantically scrambling to finish your last-minute shopping on Christmas Eve, you're usually not thinking about money. Planning your gift list early gives you plenty of time to shop around for the best prices. You can battle the crowds on Black Friday if you're willing to risk personal injury, but many retailers offer sales throughout November and even December. Many Etsy shops will offer Black Friday or Cyber Monday coupon codes, many of which last for more than a single day.

5. You will save yourself a lot of stress.

I absolutely love Christmas, and it breaks my heart to see loved ones panic throughout December. Gift giving should be a source of joy, not stress. You will save yourself a lot of stress if you start brainstorming what you want to buy, make, or do for Christmas over a month in advance. Planning in advance will also help you reduce instances of frantically wrapping gifts while on the car ride to Christmas dinner (which I've never done, obviously.) Wait for a nice, relaxing fall evening to sip some pumpkin spice coffee while perusing the internet for gift ideas.

I hope you enjoy every minute of fall and have a low-stress holiday season afterward! If you're looking for gift ideas, we'd love for you to check out our Etsy shop. Though it's always open, we make sure our inventory is extra-full for holiday shopping.

Fabulous Fall Earrings

I absolutely love fall! I love the colors, the cool weather, and I will shamelessly eat pumpkin spice everything. We have some fun fall earrings in our Etsy shop to help you celebrate the season; click the photos to visit the listings.

These cute mismatched leaves will help you blend in with the trees!

We have wooden mismatched leaf earrings too. The asymmetry perfectly captures that mid-fall feeling when the leaves have begun to change, but some are still clinging to summer.

If you're looking for a different kind of leaf, these stylized leaves may be for you. I love the pop of red!

If you're looking for something smaller, these cute leaves on polymer clay backgrounds are perfect! We have one pair in orange and one in green.

If you want more polymer clay, we also have these cute clay leaves!

And finally, these fun earrings move away from traditional fall colors, but still capture the feeling of falling leaves.

Good Earth Market Craft Show, September 2015

Though it got a little hot later in the day, we had a wonderful afternoon at the Good Earth Market! We met lots of wonderful people and lots of curious grasshoppers.

Truck 1 of 3 is ready to go! We needed a 3 vehicle caravan to get everyone to this event!

The Good Earth Market is absolutely lovely.

Vendors were set up a short walk down the driveway.

This time, we expanded into two booths to accommodate our furniture!

A crowd of curious grasshoppers also examined our inventory.

Sir, of course you may have a business card.

We made some NFL-themed furniture for this event!

I love these nautical pilings! Each has a solar-powered light on top - the perfect match of functional and beautiful!

This table is longer than the others and has an inside shelf!

Thanks to everyone who visited us. If you missed us, our Etsy shop is always open!

Bottle Cap Earrings

I've made a few posts about our bottle cap art in the past, but now, we've found another use for caps! Now that we've decorated our homes with bottle caps, we've moved on to decorating ourselves. Sometimes, you find inspiration in the strangest places!

I feel like these adorable earrings have a 1950's vibe to them.

I had to look it up, but these are leopard print, not cheetah print!

If leopard isn't your style, we have zebra-print too! I feel like these earrings are the perfect amount of animal-print.
